Executive Summary

Software designed to monitor asset health and improve asset reliability has been available for over twenty years. In the last five years, a CEO focus on digital strategies in industrial markets has accelerated adoption of asset performance management (APM) software and additional vendors such as IBM and SAP have launched product offerings. Over the years, customers have come to realize that they will achieve more success when they buy from a solution provider which combines a portfolio of software capabilities with industry expertise and a library of asset failure mode data. To provide buyers with a guide to short-list and select APM solutions, Verdantix assessed 11 vendors on 116 criteria, surveyed 284 engineering and maintenance managers, reviewed functionality in live product demos and undertook 10 in-depth customer interviews. Our analysis found that among the 11 most prominent APM solution providers, AspenTech, AVEVA, Bentley Systems and GE Digital are currently positioned as market leaders given the breadth of their capabilities and market momentum.

About the authors

David Metcalfe


David co-founded Verdantix in 2008 and leads the firm’s research and advisory work on the digitization of Operational Excellence which covers software, systems integration, wearables and drones. Prior to founding Verdantix, David was a Senior Vice President at Forrester Research and Head of Analysis and Forecasting for BT. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University in Game Theory and Decision Analysis and worked as a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School.

Malavika Tohani

Research Director

Malavika leads the Verdantix Operational Excellence practice. Her current research agenda focuses on the digitization of Operational Excellence and covers operational risk technologies, best practices and growth strategies. Her recent research focussed on benchmarking the capabilities of the prominent operational risk software vendors. She has over 10 years’ experience in research and strategy consulting. Malavika previously worked at Frost & Sullivan, managing and delivering advisory projects for clients involving expansion, acquisition, benchmarking and product development strategies. Malavika holds a MSc in Economics from Madras School of Economics.

Sebastian Winter

Industry Analyst

Sebastian is a Technology Analyst in the Verdantix Operational Excellence practice. His research agenda focuses on covering industrial risk technologies, best practices and growth strategies. Prior to joining Verdantix, Sebastian worked for Trucost, a division of S&P Dow Jones Indices, and held positions in China, Brunei and Kenya. Sebastian holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London.

Hugo Fuller


Hugo is a Technology Analyst in the Verdantix EHS practice. His research agenda focuses on covering connected worker technologies, best practices, market trends and growth strategies. Hugo joined Verdantix in 2020 having worked previously in public relations and earned media at Cision. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from University College London.
