Executive Summary

Behaviour based safety (BBS) management is used extensively as part of EHS programmes across multiple industries. The core concept of BBS is to improve safety performance by promoting critical safety behaviours amongst workers using observations of key operational procedures. A successful BBS system, however, goes much further than providing feedback on peer observations. Ultimately its goal is to initiate a significant psychological shift amongst workers in the way they think about safety. With this report, Verdantix aims to uncover the factors that contribute to an effective BBS programme, the benefits that can be realized by successfully utilizing BBS, and how BBS can be optimized with technology, such as mobile applications, connected wearables, analytical tools, EHS software, learning management systems and advanced training solutions.
