Executive Summary

This report helps technology firms and investors across the smart building sector understand proptech funding trends in 2021. From January to November 2021, proptech funds invested $9.3 billion across six technology areas: construction management, commercial property management, residential property management, retail management, operational management, and workplace management. Investment in the residential real estate sector boomed as consumers switched to online real estate services and built trust in smart home technology. The commercial real estate (CRE) sector experienced notable growth as proptech investors funded technology to solve hybrid working and decarbonization issues. Looking forwards, we predict that the proptech boom will continue into 2022, as pandemic-induced restrictions continue to lift and proptech firms mature with increasing levels of funding. Building technology providers should use this report to better understand the disruptive propositions coming to market that challenge traditional players.
