Executive Summary

This report provides an overview of the valuable role played by prequalification providers in efforts to improve contractor safety management. It serves as a lens for heads of EHS, operations and procurement to identify the pre-qualification specialists who provide services to verify the authenticity of contractors’ key documents and assess their safety performance. Demand for third-party prequalification is driven by the intractable risks inherent in outsourcing work to multiple contractors. The capabilities offered by prequalification providers to assist hiring clients manage the risks are broad and cover assessing contractor firms before a project begins as well as during the ongoing work. The offerings, including online databases, information management tools and safety performance tracking, are at varying levels of technological maturity.

David Metcalfe


David co-founded Verdantix in 2008 and leads the firm’s research and advisory work on the digitization of Operational Excellence which covers software, systems integration, wearables and drones. Prior to founding Verdantix, David was a Senior Vice President at Forrester Research and Head of Analysis and Forecasting for BT. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University in Game Theory and Decision Analysis and worked as a Research Associate at the Harvard Business School.
