Executive Summary

Sustainability regulation in the EU is undergoing a period of both simplification and persistent fragmentation. In February 2026, the European Commission published its long-awaited Omnibus Simplification Package, clarifying timelines and streamlining disclosure requirements for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the EU Taxonomy and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). However, new simplification initiatives, and the rollout of sector-specific sustainability regulations, as well as national-level requirements, continue to foster a complex and confusing landscape for firms operating in Europe. This report provides executives with an updated overview of the European ESG and sustainability regulatory environment, alongside recommendations on how to navigate the uncertainty it has generated.
