EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

British Gas has been partnering with energy intelligence software provider EnerNOC since 2014 to improve its customer engagement and energy data management services for its business customers. In this partnership EnerNOC provides British Gas with a proven customer engagement software platform and a detailed segmentation model of small business customers across 100 verticals. The partnership responds to multiple trends in the utility sector – such as increasing competition, new customer expectations and intense regulator scrutiny – which are elevating the importance of customer engagement. Verdantix finds that the scale of British Gas’ deployment of EnerNOC software indicates the pilot phase for utility customer engagement projects is coming to an end. Other utilities in Europe that are still designing or piloting customer engagement programmes should consider the scalability of programmes early on.
