Executive Summary

The extensive liabilities and risks which surround environmental health and safety performance, as well as the growing number of onerously complex and stringent regulations, demand strong management solutions. Ingersoll Rand (IR), a multinational industrial manufacturing organization, is applying operational excellence principles and tools to EH&S management to optimize processes firm-wide. This report provides senior and mid-level EH&S leaders with independent analysis of the deployment framework used by IR. Interviews with heads of EH&S at IR reveal that the firm used its experience from the existing corporate operational excellence programme as a foundation for applying the same principles to EH&S, incorporating tools that had already proven successful, such as gemba walks, centralized Management for Daily Improvement (MDI) boards, management software and standard work. The successful execution of this programme relies on diving consistently deeper into operations and processes, committing the necessary resources and communicating the benefits from the start.
