This report forms part of an ongoing series of sector-specific benchmark studies on the size and growth of the US market for energy, EH&S and sustainability management spending between 2012 and 2017. It provides sustainability leaders in market-facing and corporate roles with an independent analysis of sustainable business budgets, market size and forecast data focused on the banking industry in the US market. The analysis covers 193 banking firms with average US revenues of $5.9 billion, and 29 sustainable business initiatives, ranging from IT/telecoms energy management to sustainable travel. The banking sector was selected for in-depth analysis as it represented 9% of total US revenues among firms with over $1 billion in annual revenue and 7% of the US GDP in 2012 ($15,685 billion according to the IMF). The model finds that spend on internal sustainability programmes by the banking industry will grow from $1.7 billion in 2012 to $2.0 billion in 2017 at a CAGR of 3%. The Verdantix Critical Moments analysis finds that office energy management, retail/chain energy management, and IT/telecoms energy management will comprise the largest areas of investment, while electric vehicle initiatives will be the fastest growing.
