Executive Summary

On July 1, 2013 Cisco, the networking and communications technology provider, announced it had completed the acquisition of JouleX, a supplier of IT energy management software. Post-acquisition, JouleX will be part of the Connected Energy Solutions team within Cisco’s Industry Solutions group. JouleX’s product portfolio will integrate into Cisco’s EnergyWise solution. Cisco’s aim is to move towards a software and services centric business model, expanding beyond the network to become a leading IT player and strategic business partner to its customers. JouleX Energy Manager will sit at the heart of Cisco’s IT energy services offering and will provide Cisco with a number of opportunities to deliver increasing value to new and existing customers through an integrated service offering. Cisco sees the acquisition as important if it is to take advantage of the opportunities within the growing DCIM market and the continuing momentum of the ‘Internet of Things’ agenda. How Cisco manages the acquisition and the migration from a product to services business model will determine the success of its IT energy services solution.
