Executive Summary

In June 2009, Living PlanIT, a technology firm that develops innovative and sustainable urban technologies, announced the selection of a 1,670 hectare site in the municipality of Paredes in Portugal as the location of a new sustainable urban development: PlanIT Valley. Through the development, Living PlanIT aims to realize its vision of a replicable model for sustainable urban development, revolutionizing construction and real estate industries. PlanIT Valley will be the test bed for the deployment of Living PlanIT’s urban-scale integrative technologies, with the firm projecting this will become an innovative community where partners will develop their own technology applications. While Platinum Partners, such as Buro Happold, Cisco, and Quintain Estates and Development, have already signed, Living PlanIT still faces the challenge of providing strong empirical evidence of the success of its business model to convert sceptics and to export PlanIT Valley’s paradigm.
